He also worked on very successful tracks with Laxmikant Pyarelal starting with the movie Parasmani in 1963. He won three Filmfare awards working with the legendary duo, out of his total 6 such awards. However his work with OP Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishan as music directors is considered the most noteworthy. He was a truly multilingual artist singing in Bhojpuri, Odia, Punjabi, Sindhi, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu, Gujarati, English, Dutch and Arabic. He started his singing career back in 1944 has sung more than 7,400 songs till his death in Jul 1980. He took his elementary classical music lessons from Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo. His singing talent was recognized by his elder brothers friend Abdul Hameed.
